Healthcare and Medical Construction

Health centres, clinics and specialist build-outs, delivered around the equipment and the regulation that come with them.

Gray Construction Services has completed 13 medical projects worth roughly $5.6 million, ranging from ground-up health centres to interior build-outs for individual practices.

The largest is the Chiefland Health Center, a 6,300 square foot facility delivered design-build for approximately $921,000. The rest is the working substance of rural healthcare provision: family medicine additions, dental and orthodontic build-outs, dermatology and chiropractic offices, behavioural health clinics and a veterinary clinic.

Small medical projects are deceptively demanding. The building is simple; the equipment, the services feeding it and the regulatory environment are not.

What makes medical work different

Equipment drives the build. Imaging, dental chairs, sterilisation and lab equipment each arrive with power, plumbing, drainage, shielding and clearance requirements that have to be designed in rather than accommodated afterwards. Coordinating vendors is a core part of the scope on every one of these projects.

Mechanical and electrical systems carry more load than the floor area suggests. Air changes, isolation, medical gas where required, and redundancy for critical equipment all sit behind an ordinary looking ceiling.

Most build-outs happen in or beside operating practices. Infection control, dust containment and maintaining patient access during construction are planned rather than improvised.

How this work is procured

Medical work has been delivered design-build and through traditional general contracting, and pre-construction is available as a standalone service for owners evaluating a site or a budget.

Can you build around an operating practice?

Yes. Infection control, dust containment and maintaining patient access during construction are planned into the phasing.

What is your largest healthcare project?

The Chiefland Health Center, a 6,300 square foot facility delivered design-build for approximately $921,000.

Do you work on behavioural health facilities?

Yes, including work for Meridian Behavioral Healthcare in Bell, Starke, Lake City and Gainesville.
